The other day, I found myself caught in a whirlwind of misfortune. From physical pain to frustrating mishaps, it felt like the universe was conspiring against me. As my frustration grew, I was faced with an unexpected challenge – delivering a message to the youth for our youth service. Little did I know that this difficult day would lead me to a powerful realization and an inspiring lesson.

Embracing the Chaos

As I dragged myself out of bed that morning, my knee throbbing with pain, I knew it was going to be a tough day. It was scorching hot outside, and to make matters worse, my lawn mower refused to cooperate. Just when I thought things couldn't get any worse, a bottle of Coke exploded all over me, adding insult to injury. As tensions mounted, I found myself getting into arguments with my loved ones. It was a challenging moment, and anger began to consume me.

Despite my reluctance and emotional turmoil, I had a responsibility to fulfill. I was scheduled to deliver a message to the youth for our youth service. My heart wasn't in the right place, and I lacked the motivation to inspire others. Nevertheless, I knew I had no choice but to fulfill my commitment. With a heavy heart, I climbed into my truck and sped off to the youth center, hoping to find some solace and guidance before facing the youth.

In the stillness of that moment, as I poured out my frustrations to God, a different word began to form in my mind. It was a question that resonated deeply within me – "Who else had a bad day in the Bible?" The immediate response from one of the youth when I presented that question to them was "Job." While Job's story was indeed marked by immense suffering, it was not the answer that had been laid on my heart. In that moment, I heard a distinct whisper from the Holy Spirit, telling me it was Jesus.

The Terrible Day of Crucifixion

Contemplating the crucifixion of Jesus, I realized that the day he was crucified was undeniably terrible for him. Jesus knew the agony and torment that awaited him—he did not desire to endure such suffering. When faced with this overwhelming prospect, what did he do? He sought solace in the Garden of Gethsemane and prayed, expressing his human desire for the suffering to be taken away: "My Father! If it is possible, let this cup of suffering be taken away from me. Yet I want your will to be done, not mine" (Matthew 26:39 NLT).

Jesus chose to follow through with his crucifixion, despite his reluctance and fear, because he understood the assignment. Even as things got progressively worse for him, his resolve remained steadfast. While he was praying, his friends (the disciples) couldn't even stay awake with him. And then, remarkably, the crowd that had recently welcomed him with praise in Jerusalem turned against him, demanding his crucifixion and the release of a criminal. Jesus' unwavering commitment to his assignment was an act of immense strength and trust in God's plan.

Reflecting on the scripture from James 1:2 (NLT), "Dear brothers and sisters, when troubles of any kind come your way, consider it an opportunity for great joy," we realize that difficult days provide an opportunity for us to deepen our faith and grow our testimonies. Jesus' unwavering commitment and reliance on his heavenly Father serve as a powerful example for us. In times of hardship, we too can lean on our Heavenly Father for strength and guidance.

Isaiah 55:8-9 (NLT) reminds us that God's thoughts and ways are beyond our understanding. We may not comprehend why certain things happen in our lives or why some prayers go unanswered. However, we can find peace in the knowledge that God is in control, regardless of our circumstances. By anchoring ourselves in Him, we can weather life's storms, knowing that He is our refuge and safe haven (Psalm 91:2 NLT).

Romans 8:28 (NLT) reassures us that God works all things together for the good of those who love Him and are called according to His purpose. Even amidst our darkest days, we can trust that God is orchestrating a greater plan—a plan that we may not fully grasp but one that holds blessings and purpose.

Conclusion

In the midst of a terrible day, my journey took an unexpected turn as I sought God. You see, we have a peace in Christ that allows us to overcome and continue to press on through the struggles and trials we face and on the other side, God has a purpose and use for those struggles in our lives. We may not like it, we may not understand it, but ultimately God will use it for good, just like he used my bad day and turned it into a message of hope and ultimate peace.

When I was a child, I would always test my parents’ limits. I became aware by doing this which buttons I could push with my parents and which buttons were best left un-pushed. Sometimes unknowingly or un-wittily, I would still accidentally press the wrong button and regret it later. Usually, this resulted in a punishment that was either physically painful or a creative punishment, but I still did not care for the results. All children do this, and I am sure as you are reading this, you are probably thinking of yourself at a young age when you tested your parents and went too far or did something that resulted in some punishment. We can remember the correction that we received for doing what we did. We recognize the effect that it had on us and the outcomes that were the results of the mistake or the punishment.

Even as adults, we still make mistakes, test our limits, and do things we sometimes know or do not know we should do, which is called sin. We still face consequences for our actions which are sometimes more dramatic than when we were children. Sometimes resulting in ruined reputation, rumors, and slander against who we are or what we have or have not done. Sometimes things are true; sometimes they are false.

Here is the good news even though we mess up. Even though we deserve punishment for what we have done in our past, God still made a way for us to be forgiven of our sins and our wrongs and made a way to change our lives. “The Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many” (Matthew 20:28).

Christ gave His life for you and me so we can be forgiven and have a clean slate. Though we deserve punishment, He took our punishment for us. Sin cannot and could not go beyond the cross. Our injustice is what crucified Christ, which became the way for us to be free. The sin of the world had a way of holding us with shame and hate; however, God’s plan of mercy and forgiveness through the death of Christ on the cross and His resurrection changed that. We are no longer bound to our mistakes and sins; our past was crucified to the cross when we believe in Him. He provided the way and the truth of God’s promise to us. If you can accept Christ by faith today, you can be forgiven for your sins. You can stand secure in the knowledge that through the love of Christ, your soul is saved through the love of God, and your soul is eternally saved. Are you willing to take that leap of faith? If not, what is stopping you?
